Count the Flags

While out for a walk in my neighbourhood last night, I commented on how nice it was to see so many houses displaying our Canada flag.  It reminded me of when my children were young and we would turn a walk around the block into a math moment by counting how many houses had…pumpkins in the fall, Christmas lights in December, bird feeders in the summer etc.  My son began taking along a clipboard and tallying how many ____ he saw (something new he had learned how to do).  Why not take the opportunity to recognize that Math is Everywhere and count the flags with your children on your next walking expedition!

Shaving Cream Fun

A little bit of shaving cream, a few drops of red paint and some wonderful conversation! This simple activity allowed for some great dialogue between this little girl and myself this morning. We talked about how it felt on her fingers. “Furry” was her first reply when asked.  “Furry?”  “No, I’m just kidding, it’s nice and soft” she said with a smile. She wrote her name in the mixture, drew pictures, discovered that you can create the colour pink when you mix red and white together and then made prints on different coloured paper. She told me how much fun is was and then she proceeded to encourage the other children to give it a try. Good times at Ingersoll OEY today .
